Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal
Both options can solve a stump problem, but they are not the same. For many Salem yards, grinding is the practical choice because it is usually faster and less disruptive.
Stump grinding
Grinding uses a machine to cut the visible stump into chips and lower it below grade. This is commonly used when the goal is to remove the trip hazard and restore the yard surface.
- Less invasive
- Often faster
- Good for lawns and landscaping
- Leaves underground roots to decay
Full stump removal
Full removal digs out the stump and root ball. It can be useful for construction or replanting in the exact same spot, but it creates more disruption.
- Removes more root material
- More digging and cleanup
- Can leave a larger hole
- May cost more depending on access
Which one should you choose?
| Goal | Usually better option |
|---|---|
| Plant grass over the area | Stump grinding plus cleanup and soil |
| Build a patio or structure | Ask provider; deeper grinding or removal may be needed |
| Remove a trip hazard quickly | Stump grinding |
| Replant a tree in the exact same spot | Full removal may be better |
